“I think the right thing to do is to revisit the policy and have a look at what is needed now, because clearly the world has moved on and the situation is different.”

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said: “We are working at pace to ensure the UK’s transition to clean energy creates new opportunities and jobs across the country.

“This includes making sure that we are building on our world-leading strengths in offshore wind and renewables, creating new green jobs and supporting a just transition for workers in oil and gas.”

He added that the Government was “investing heavily in skills and training to ensure the UK workforce is equipped to take advantage of the opportunities that the transition to clean energy presents.”

The UK government has been actively working towards boosting employment in the North Sea region by introducing new sectors such as carbon capture and storage, hydrogen production, and offshore wind. One of the proposed strategies is the implementation of selective licensing to keep activity going in the area.

In order to support these initiatives, the Government has established the Office for Clean Energy Jobs to ensure that new roles are of high quality and offer fair compensation. Additionally, they have introduced the clean industry bonus to attract investments in factories located in coastal communities.

A spokesperson for the Department of Energy and Climate Change highlighted the government’s commitment to creating good jobs for North Sea workers through a smooth transition. This includes significant investments in offshore wind and carbon capture storage clusters. Great British Energy, based in Aberdeen, has also announced a £300m investment in British supply chains, which is expected to unlock further investments and generate thousands of skilled jobs.

By investing in clean energy technologies and supporting local industries, they are paving the way for a brighter future for the North Sea workforce.
