Before 2008, output per hour was increasing at a rate of approximately 2 percent annually, but this figure has dropped to just 0.5 percent since then, as per EY&#8217;s data. However, there is optimism that the UK&#8217;s economy is on the brink of a significant acceleration, thanks to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons for this optimism is the prevalence of knowledge-intensive industries in the UK that are expected to reap substantial productivity benefits from AI. The International Monetary Fund identifies sectors such as business services, finance, IT, and pharmaceuticals as prime candidates for AI-driven productivity gains. The IMF believes that if the UK can relax regulatory constraints and develop AI skills, the economy could experience a boost in output by as much as two-thirds. This potential surge in productivity could finally deliver the desired outcome of sustained economic growth and improved living standards for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Recent data indicates a positive trend in productivity growth. According to Berenberg, the past 18 months have witnessed one of the strongest periods of productivity growth since 2008, with output per job increasing by 1.4 percent year on year, based on figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Interestingly, this growth is not stemming from an expansion in the workforce, as jobless numbers have been on the rise. Instead, it is driven by higher output levels from fewer employees. Berenberg attributes a significant portion of last year&#8217;s output increase to the adoption of AI by computer programmers, with the information and communication sector experiencing an 8 percent surge in output alongside an 8 percent decline in employment since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>While some experts attribute the productivity boost to AI adoption, others argue that workforce reductions and cost-cutting measures are playing a more significant role. The Bank of England&#8217;s decision-maker panel reports minimal impact from AI on employment over the past three years, with Pantheon Macroeconomics highlighting limited evidence of AI displacing workers. Instead, Pantheon suggests that productivity gains could be largely driven by job cuts resulting from government policies such as national insurance increases and minimum wage hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite differing perspectives on the impact of AI on productivity, there is consensus that AI adoption is on the rise in the UK. The Office for National Statistics indicates a notable increase in self-reported AI usage among businesses with 10 or more employees, while the Bank of England&#8217;s survey forecasts a 0.9 percent annual productivity boost from AI over the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>However, one area where the UK continues to lag behind is in the public sector&#8217;s productivity gains. EY estimates that the public sector&#8217;s underperformance is costing the economy \u00a380 billion annually, with potential GDP growth of 3 percent if productivity had kept pace with the private sector between 2019 and 2024. To address this issue, EY suggests leveraging more tech-enabled and AI tools, particularly in streamlining routine tasks within the public sector.<\/p>\n<p>As AI adoption continues to grow, AI-driven productivity gains hold promise for the UK&#8217;s economic recovery. The Chancellor&#8217;s fiscal challenges could potentially be alleviated by sustained productivity improvements, with each incremental upgrade in the GDP growth rate translating into substantial tax revenue gains over time.
